Tips for Parents, Players & Coaches Participating in District Youth Basketball Tournaments
District Series Events
For Parents:
- Arrive early before your game time (30 minutes ahead is recommended).
- Print directions to gymnasium locations (especially from gym-to-gym).
- Print your game schedule.
- Encourage your son/daughter and their teammates.
- Know what NOT to say: Avoid criticizing the other team, their coaches or the officials.
- Know the DSE admission policy.
- If you are discouraged with your coach, wait until Monday to approach him/her.
For Players:
- Bring your equipment, including shoes and proper uniform(s).
- Show respect for game officials, opponents, teammates, coaches and tournament personnel.
- Know game times and arrive early (30 minutes ahead is recommended).
- Know your coach’s policies for playing time.
- Communicate with your coach.
- Secure rides to games.
- Bring your waiver with you.
- Practice sportsmanship.
- Find little victories throughout the game.
- Plan to be At Your Best Today!
For Coaches:
- Check in at your game site.
- Make sure an adult scorekeeper/timekeeper is available for each game.
- Disseminate information to players/parents prior to each event.
- Send playing time reminders to parents.
- Maintain up-to-date waivers and permission to treat forms, and bring them with you in a booklet.
- Bring a first aid kit.
- Bring a scorebook.
- Bring warm-up basketballs and one game ball.
- Remind your players that their goal should be skill development, which trumps the short-term objective of winning games.
